Delaware County College Admits Telling Some Students, Incorrectly, They Were Good To Go

By Mike DeNardo

MEDIA, Pa. (CBS) -- A local college admits it had notified more than 100 students that they'd met their graduation requirements, but they hadn't.

Delaware County Community College sends letters to students each year, notifying them that they've earned enough credits to graduate.   But in the latest round of letters, there was a mistake.

"It was a human error, basically," says Anthony Twyman, assistant to the president for communcations.

Twyman says 400 letters were sent out this month, but 100 to 150 of them went to students who were short of the credits needed to graduate.

"It was just the wrong pull of information from the wrong time period," he explains. "And once we recognized that an error had been made, we corrected it as quickly as possible."

Letters were sent a few days later apologizing for the confusion.

Twyman says degrees are determined by the number of credits, and the college wouldn't designate anyone as a graduate if they hadn't actually earned it.
