Crews Getting Ready For Monday Morning Wintry Mix

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Road crews are preparing for snow, sleet and freezing rain overnight that could make for a slick commute during the morning rush.

Much like last week, this offering from Mother Nature is expected to affect morning commuters. But this time, it's not just snow, but a mix -- including sleet and freezing rain.

PennDOT spokesman Gene Blaum says their trucks are ready to get the salt out there in the overnight hours:

"Our aim is to keep the roadways wet because obviously with the frigid temperatures that we've had, it'll be important to get the salt down and to do our best to keep the precipitation from bonding quickly to the asphalt or concrete pavement."

Blaum urges drivers to just take it easy out there.

"Especially cautious traveling over bridges or elevated ramps because they tend to freeze before the road surface."

As for how we stack up compared to last winter, PennDOT reports using 8,800 tons of salt going into 2015. The same time last year, it was 45,000 tons.

So far, so good, but still plenty of winter to go.
