South Jersey Fire Causes Power Outages, Street Closures

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP, N.J. (CBS) -- Crews battled a fire in Egg Harbor Township on Thursday.

Officials from South Jersey Gas say they received a call about the fire on the side of Ocean Heights Avenue just before 2:00 p.m. The caller told dispatchers that a live electric wire came in contact with an existing guard rail.

Supposedly the electric current went through the rail, traveled to a gas main close by and caused it to ignite.

Crews remained on the scene as the blaze burned.

South Jersey gas announced, shortly after 10:20 p.m., that the fire was out and that the gas main had been shut off. No injuries were reported.

Multiple homes reported power outages as a result of the fire and Ocean Heights Avenue remains closed in both directions between Blackman and Steelmanville.
