Cold Blast Of Weather A Reminder To Some To Get Car Ready For Winter

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- This blast of winter weather is a good reminder to weatherize your car.

Hugh Snyderman, owner of Snyderman's Gulf station says a lot of damage can be done to your car in the winter if you're not careful.

"I mean, an engine is designed for heat but it's not designed for cold," said Snyderman.

He says make sure you have enough antifreeze in your car's system to prevent freezing and have it checked for leaks.

"The most logical thing is the engine coolant, which is the antifreeze. Most cars, they come through with antifreeze. Most people don't even service it that much anymore because most of the coolants are long life coolants where they're good for 100,000 miles. So as long as you don't add water to it, you'll be okay with that part of it."

And check your tires in cold weather:

"It makes everything contract so you could have a tire with 32 pounds of air in it and the temperature drops under 30 degrees, next thing you know, you have 28 pounds."
