'Chromies' Pack Parx Casino Track To Watch Derby Winner Race

By Dan Wing

BENSALEM, Pa. (CBS) - Thousands made their way to Parx Casino in Bensalem Saturday evening to watch the 35th running of the Pennsylvania Derby, and attendance was definitely up a bit from years past with Kentucky Derby winner California Chrome in the mix.

It was hard for everyone in attendance to find a seat, but abundant sunshine and good attitudes made for a nice day at the track.

"We're loving it, it's awesome. Great atmosphere, the people have been so friendly to us," Dave tells KYW Newsradio.

Dave and four friends had come down from New York City and were all wearing matching purple shirts supporting California Chrome, who finished 6th.

"We thought California Chrome would be much, much better, and he didn't have that final kick," he said. "I guess that long layoff, injury probably played a part in it."

John from Bridesburg thinks the race's winner, Bayern, was just the better horse:

"I just seen Bayern take off. Just looked like the better horse. Stronger runner."

John says the odds were exactly why he didn't bet on the Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner:

"So, I figured they didn't want him to win. You know what I'm saying? I always go against, and plus, you can't win nothing."

Many people thought that the race was a nice warm up for California Chrome, ahead of the Breeder's Cup.
