Cherry Hill Student Wins New Jersey 'Doodle 4 Google' Competition

by Ian Bush

CHERRY HILL, N.J. (CBS) -- Google has named a third grader from Camden County as New Jersey's winner in their competition to create a 'doodle' for the search engine.

"When we got the phone call that I won, we were all shocked," said Allison Kang.

Don't be surprised: Allison's Google Doodle is her joyful outlook for the future -- when humans have wings.

"Because you go high just like the birds, you can see the clouds. So I thought Google could be the clouds," Allison explained.

The nine-year-old spells it out with wisps of cotton; as her likeness takes flight over a town, it wears a beaming smile.

"It was on my board for the fourth and fifth grade classes, and her brother was doing it for the fifth grade class, so she was really eager and did it on her own," said Andrea Tierney, art teacher at Sharp Elementary's.

Tierney gave her classes a pep talk that paid off.

"I said, 'I know the talent and the skill this school has -- you shouldn't feel like it's such a big contest, I can't win.' Now it's kind of like, 'see? I was right.'"

When asked what it felt like to have the chance to see her drawing all over the world, Allison answered: "I feel proud."

Now, Allison hopes to win the national competition, where the best Doodle will land on Google's homepage.

It comes with a $30,000 college scholarship, and more money for the winner's school.
