Woman Dies After Car Plunges Into Schuylkill River

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A female died after the car she was driving inexplicably plunged into the Schuylkill River Tuesday afternoon.

The incident happened at about noon Tuesday at Kelly Drive near Hunting Park Avenue in Fairmount Park.

According to investigators, the female driver was traveling in a station wagon on Hunting Park Avenue when the car lost control and ended up plunging into the Schuylkill River.

Emergency crews attempted to rescue the woman from the car, but the water hindered their efforts.

About an hour later authorities got the vehicle out of the water.

The 41-year-old woman was found inside and pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity was not immediately known.

It is unclear if the woman suffered some type of medical condition or if a car malfunction played a role.

The deadly incident remains under investigation.
