PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Police have identified the victim who was killed in a car crash on Roosevelt Boulevard late Monday night.

Thirty-nine-year-old Eric Ferrell reportedly lost control of his vehicle before striking a tree and a median.

It happened on the Boulevard near Adams Avenue in the Northeast.

Police say around 11 p.m., a 2011 Mazda was traveling in the northbound lanes when it lost control and jumped the curb, then hit a tree and burst into flames.

Police say there was a group of people who witnessed the crash as they waited at a bus stop.

Emergency officials put out the fire and found one person deceased in the car.

Accident investigators originally didn't know if the person was a man or a woman, or the person's age.

Crews were unable to remove the victim's body from the scene, so the vehicle was towed to the Medical Examiner's Office.

"Unknown at this time, but accident investigation will process the scene and take photographs," said Chief Inspector Scott Small. "They're going to measure any of the skid-marks that were found to determine if in fact this vehicle was traveling in access of 40 miles per hour, which is the speed limit on the Boulevard."
