Yonkers Man Drowns During Independence Day Swim At Jersey Shore

MANTOLOKING, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A 22-year-old man drowned during an Independence Day swim at the Jersey Shore, an official said.

Friends of the man said he was swimming in the ocean when he disappeared from their sight. The missing swimming, who has not been identified, was found dead in the surf less than an hour later.

Al Della Fave, a spokesman for the Ocean County prosecutor's office, says in a statement that lifeguards in Mantoloking called 911 about the missing swimmer from Yonkers, New York, at 2:35 p.m. on Saturday.

Searchers from the U.S. Coast Guard, New Jersey State Police and fire crews from surrounding communities responded, scouring the water.

The man's body was found by lifeguards just after 3 p.m. They gave him CPR and transported him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

No other details were available.
