Westchester County Launches App For Reporting Tips, Suspicious Activity

WHITE PLAINS N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) - Westchester County residents can now use their phones to anonymously report suspicious activity or information about outstanding warrants and cold cases.

Officials launched an app on Thursday with 37 of the county's 42 police agencies are participating.

Senders are assigned a six-digit code with numbers and letters so they remain anonymous.

A live two-way chat is available. It's deleted when the discussion is finished.

Tipsters also can text photos or video.

The Yonkers Police Department has been using the system for four years.

The app can be downloaded through the Westchester County Crime Tips Facebook page.

Anonymous tips also can be submitted by going to the Facebook page on a desktop computer.

If it's an emergency, you should still call 911.
