Parents Sue Valley Stream School District Following Violent Attack On Son

VALLEY STREAM, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Parents of a Long Island teenager are suing Valley Stream School District, accusing the school of failing to prevent an attack on their son that landed him in the hospital.

As WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported, 16-year-old Zion Guzman-Milton had to have emergency surgery and needed 32 stitches on his head.

Attorney Fred Brewingtron said Zion was attacked two years ago in the stairwell of Valley Stream South High School.

He said the family is suing the school because the attack was racially motivated and the school did not protect Zion, and even tried to cover up the crime.

"He had a concussion, a skull fracture that required an emergency craniotomy; which means they basically had to relieve the pressure and the pain that was building up on top of his brain," Brewingtron said.

Zion has since recovered from the injuries.

A teenager pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge in the case and then the record was sealed, Hall reported.

The school cannot comment on pending litigation, Newsday reported.
