Suffolk County Seeking Federal Help To Pay For Body Cameras

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Suffolk County is looking for help from Washington as it moves forward with its plan to equip officers with body cameras.

Body cameras are already in place in parts of Long Island. Freeport Police are equipped with them. Nassau County police will be outfitting 31 officers with body cameras in August, WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported.

Suffolk County police have now applied for a piece of the federal grant to help fund body cameras for their officers. The Department of Justice has a $20 million grant specifically to help pay for body cameras.

Residents have mixed opinions on the cameras, Hall reported. Some say they'll bring much-needed clarity in controversial cases, others call them an invasion of privacy, Hall reported.
