Rafters Stranded For 2 Days At Sea Rescued Off LI Coast

PORT JEFFERSON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A stranded rafter floating in the water for several days was rescued off the shores of Long Island on Tuesday.

According to officials, an off-duty Coast Guard official rescued the man, who was stranded in a small inflatable raft off the coast of Port Jefferson in the Long Island Sound, at around 9:30 a.m.

Officials say the raft had left from Milford, Connecticut on Sunday and had been in the water ever since.

Authorities later rescued a second man who had left the raft in an attempt to swim to Charles Island, off the coast of Connecticut.

Both men were taken to area hospitals for treatment.

It was not immediately clear how the raft became stranded.
