12-Year-Old Girl Shot In Leg In Queens

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A 12-year-old girl has been injured in a shooting in the Arverne section of the Rockaways while at a youth event, police said.

Police said they were called around 4:40 p.m. Saturday to 106 Beach 59th Street about a young girl shot in the leg, 1010 WINS reported.

Witnesses told CBS 2's Dave Carlin they heard what sounded like a single shot near a basketball court just before 5 p.m.

"She was just standing up being an innocent young girl and unfortunately she got shot by a stray bullet," one witness told CBS 2.

"It's very important. This was a day for the kids and there shouldn't be any pistols at all," another witness said.

Witnesses said the girl, whose name is Alliyah, stayed calm as bystanders used a shirt and gathered around her leg to try and stop the bleeding.

As CBS 2 reported, police arrested two suspects.

The girl was taken to Long Island Jewish Hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
