NYPD Officer Slain In Sicily In Century Old Mafia Cold Case Honored With Special Ceremony

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- Over 100 years later a cold case has finally been solved.

As WCBS 880's Ginny Kosola reported, a special ceremony was held at the Calvary Cemetery to honor a slain NYPD officer.

Prayers were said and thanks were offered to the Italian police who kept the investigation, into the death of Lieutenant Joseph Petrosino, open.

An alleged mobster was caught on a wiretap saying that one of his relatives killed the NYPD lieutenant in 1909. Petrosino was in Sicily investigating organized crime at the time.

"I'm glad this sort of brings closure to his murder, but I have some doubts, the Italian police have some doubts, whether this guy is just saying these things to get some kind of street cred or something like that," grand-nephew Joseph Petrosino said.
