NYC Public Advocate Warns UPS Of Possible Consequences For Announcing 250 Firings
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - New York City officials said Thursday the tax breaks UPS gets from the state and city are now on the table for discussion after 250 workers have been told they'll be fired for walking off the job.
As WCBS 880's Monica Miller reported, Public Advocate Letitia James said $43 million in tax breaks and participation in a program to reduce parking tickets is in on the line now that 250 drivers have been given termination notices for walking off the job in February. Twenty UPS workers have already been fired.
"We will not stand by idly when New York City workers are being mistreated," James said.
Protestors and union leaders joined the public advocate, chanting "save the 250."
UPS said they have the right to fire its workers under the agreement they have with the union. The shipping company said pulling tax breaks will only mean more people will lose their jobs.
"I don't appreciate threats, one. And two, the reality is that all that we are asking is that they come to the table," James said.
The remaining 230 drivers were notified they will be fired as soon as replacements are trained.
The 250 workers based out of Maspeth, Queens staged a 90-minute protest in February over the firing of a long-time employee.
