Town Supervisor Wants North Hempstead Police Precinct Restored

NORTH HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- North Hempstead's town supervisor is calling for the merger of two police precincts to be reversed.

The town's 6th Precinct was merged with the 3rd Precinct several years ago as a cost-cutting move. But recent international terror acts and local terror concerns have Supervisor Judi Bosworth and others questioning that decision and concerned about security.

Bosworth said she's heard "from so many people saying, 'We need to have a more specific police presence here in the town of North Hempstead.'"

"The whole idea of the merges was not a good one, and we're seeing that," she said.

Bosworth said the merger has resulted in fewer plainclothes officers and makes it more difficult to conduct sting operations.

Nassau County police officials insist the town is properly protected and that the merger did not make the town more vulnerable.
