2 Dead In N.J. Turnpike Extension Crash In Jersey City

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Two people were killed Monday afternoon in a multi-vehicle crash on the New Jersey Turnpike Extension coming from the Holland Tunnel.

As Joe Biermann reported from Chopper 2, the accident happened at 3:19 p.m., on the Newark Bay extension of the Turnpike just past toll booth 14C in Jersey City.

A car struck a CarePoint Health van head-on, and was demolished to the point of being rendered a tangle of twisted metal. A third vehicle was also involved.

The car may have been headed through the toll booth and made a U-turn, crashing head-on into the van, Biermann reported.

New Jersey State Police said two people had been confirmed dead in the crash. Further details were not immediately released.
