Mothers Of Men Slain By Cops Call For Federal Probe
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A group of mothers who buried their sons and saw the police officers who killed them go free are calling for a Justice Department investigation into what they call a long-standing pattern of police killings of unarmed black and Hispanic men.
As WCBS 880's Irene Cornell reported, the mothers of Sean Bell, Anthony Baez, Amadou Diallo and Ramarley Graham gathered to make their plea Friday, two days before Mother's Day.
"Two days from now will be Mother's Day. Tuesday will be my birthday. And I don't have my son with me because of one NYPD and a couple of his members from his team that racial profiled my son and end up killing him," said Constance Malcolm, mother of Graham, an 18-year-old who was fatally shot in 2012 in his grandmother's home after he was followed home by a cop.
The officer thought Graham was disposing of drugs and had a gun, police said.
Malcolm is seeking federal civil rights charges in the killing.
