Mets' Noah Syndergaard Hopes To Pitch In All-Star Game Next Season
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Noah Syndergaard might not pitch for the Mets in 2014, but don't count out the fireballer just yet.
Despite suffering physical setbacks and not living up to expectations on the mound this season, New York's top pitching prospect intends to make an impression on the big stage sooner rather than later.
The 21-year-old pitched in his second straight Futures Game on Sunday, but he doesn't plan to appear in three in a row.
"Hopefully, next year I will be in the (major league) All-Star Game," the former first-round pick said. "This isn't bad, but it's not where I want to be ... I was hoping that I would be up (in the majors) by now, but I'm enjoying my time (in Las Vegas). When the Mets feel like I'm ready, then hopefully I get that call."
Syndergaard got the job done in the Futures Game. He recorded the save in the ninth for Team USA, surrendering one hit and striking out a batter.
"I'm still only 21 years old; I still got time," the right-hander said. "I'm just hoping I get up there pretty quickly and contribute to some wins, like a playoff push ... I'm really focusing on becoming more of a pitcher than a thrower. I don't want to be predictable. I basically make sure I use all my pitches."
In 79 2/3 innings pitched for Triple-A Las Vegas in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League, Syndergaard is 7-4 with a 5.31 ERA. He's struck out 82 and walked 23.
