Sweet Sounds Of Mozart's Masterpieces Come To Lincoln Center, Subway Stations

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Lincoln Center Mostly Mozart Festival kicked off Friday, with several performances being streamed online – and a few taking place in the subway.

As WCBS 880's Marla Diamond reported, you never know what you'll find underground. At the 59th Street-Columbus Circle subway station, Diamond came across Eric Jacobson, who plays cello in the subways as part of Music under New York.

"Today we are celebrating Mozart in three locations," said Lydia Bradshaw of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. "We have performances at Fulton Street, Times Square and here at Columbus Circle."

The Mostly Mozart Festival takes place above ground at Lincoln Center. This is the 50th year for the popular summertime event.

The music is a perfect draw for Lukem Yatchi's coffee shop.

"And I do, you know, come get a coffee and sit down, listen to the music and then they keep going, but it helps," Yatchi said.

The festival ends Aug. 27.
