Police: Children Find Grenade In Water At Long Island Park

LAKE RONKONKOMA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Suffolk County police have safely destroyed a grenade that children found at a park in Lake Ronkonkoma.

Children playing in the water at Lt. Michael Murphy Memorial Park around 7 p.m. Sunday picked up the grenade, thinking it was a rock, police said.

It appeared to have been in the water for some time, Newsday reported.

The grenade's pin was intact. It's unclear if it was live.

The beach was evacuated and police used a robot to place it in a hole, where it was destroyed.

No injuries were reported.

The park is named for a former U.S. Navy Seal who was killed in action in Afghanistan.
