Lack Of Drinkable Water At Governor's Island Forces Visitors To Pay Up
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- If you plan on heading out to Governor's Island this summer, you better bring some bottled water along.
"How can an island like this not have fresh water?"
It's a question many heading to the island ponder, according to New York City Park Advocates' Geoffrey Croft.
But it's true. The $15 million project to build a water pipe from Brooklyn is still a work in progress, WCBS 880's Jim Smith reported.
The trust for Governor's Island said it will be completed by August.
To add insult to injury, if you don't remember to bring any water with you, you will need to purchase water for $2.50 a bottle from vendors.
"It's pretty harsh especially when the summer gets really hot. It's gonna be tough so you have to remember, bring your own," said Adela.
Everyone getting off the ferry from Governor's Island told 1010 WINS' Gary Baumgarten they had a great time exploring, but couldn't believe there was no drinkable water.
"I think it's a shame where you spend $75 million on renovation, they should have some drinking water. I heard that they were -- a couple saying they needed something to drink for their kids and there was no water unless you purchased water on the island," said Eddie.
"If it's for the public, it (water) should be provided for the public," Andrea said.
When the Coast Guard was in charge of the island they had a water filtration system, but later testing showed it wasn't safe to drink, Baumgarten reported.
