20 Adults, 5 Children Displaced In Jersey City Fire, Officials Say

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Twenty adults and five children were displaced after a three-alarm fired ripped through three buildings in Jersey City, officials say.

According to officials, the fire broke out at a residential building on at 104 Yales Avenue at around 9 a.m. The fire then spread to two other buildings nearby.

Two firefighters and two fire captains were injured fighting the blaze, officials said. They were taken Jersey City Medical Center-Barnabas Health for medical care.

A cat was also rescued from the fire and was resuscitated by one of the firefighters, officials said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but officials believe that charcoal dumped into a canister in the backyard may have smoldered, causing the blaze to begin.

The American Red Cross said they are providing care to the displaced families.
