Ebola Fears Expected To Have Little Impact On NYC Marathon

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- There will be runners from around the globe at this year's TCS New York City Marathon, but none who registered are from the three West African nations plagued by the Ebola outbreak, race officials said.

Nevertheless, the deadly virus has very much been on the mind of marathon director Mary Wittenberg for several months, WCBS 880's Marla Diamond reported.

"We absolutely assumed there would be cases in New York by time we got to the marathon, and as always, the health and safety of our runners and our volunteers is always of primary concern," Wittenberg said.

Wittenberg said officials have "heard very little from our runners" voicing concerns about the disease's impact on the race, and no one has canceled as a result of Ebola.

Wittenberg said marathon officials are taking precautions by working closely with city, state and federal health officials to ensure the safety of runners and spectators.
