Darrelle Revis To Be In Cast Up To 3 Months Following Surgery For Torn Right Wrist Ligament
NEW YORK (AP) -- Revis Island is under repair.
New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis had surgery Thursday in Manhattan to repair a torn ligament in his right wrist and is expected to be in a hard cast for two to three months.
The team announced that Revis will be limited during the offseason program, which begins April 18. He is expected to be fully recovered for training camp in late-July.
Revis was selected for his seventh Pro Bowl last season, but didn't play because of what was announced as a sore shoulder. The star cornerback also had soreness in the wrist after the season and it lingered into the offseason.
Further tests and examinations revealed last week he had a torn ligament that required surgery. The procedure was performed by renowned hand-wrist specialist Dr. Charles Melone, the head of the Beth Israel Hand Surgery Center in New York.
Revis was never listed on the team's injury report with a wrist ailment, but it apparently began feeling sore early in the season. It was initially believed Revis simply had a sprain and played through it while wearing a brace on his wrist after Week 3 against Philadelphia.
Revis, 30, ended up having a solid year, but was criticized for some uncharacteristic struggles in a few games. He never publicly used the wrist as an excuse, but it affected his ability to punch and jam receivers at the line of scrimmage -- one of Revis' biggest assets.
He also missed two games with a severe concussion.
Despite the injuries, Revis had five interceptions in his return to the Jets after playing one season in Tampa Bay and then helping New England win the Super Bowl in February 2015. He signed with New York in the offseason for five years and $70 million, coming back to the team with which he spent his first six NFL seasons.
