Connecticut Lawmaker Pushes To Repeal Prisoner Early Release Program

BRISTOL, CONN. (CBSNewYork) -- Connecticut State Sen. Leonard Suzio is working to repeal the state's prisoner early release program, pointing out that a violent crime that killed a 1-year-old baby was at the hands of a graduate of the program, Arthur Hapgood.

As WCBS 880's Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau reported, Hapgood had an extensive history of violent crimes and upon released from prison, got high on a toxic mix of drugs and stabbed his baby niece to death.

"He actually wasn't reformed because he goes out and he resumes his life of drug abuse and murders a little, innocent baby," Suzio said.

However, as Schneidau reported, it should be noted that the killing of the baby occurred well after Hapgood's eight-month early release date from prison.
