Brown, a student at P.S. 43 in Queens, was riding the bus with his sister before the crash.

"I'm heartbroken by this tragic loss of one of our children, and share my condolences with the family and school community," said
Schools Chancellor Richard A. Carranza in a statement. "We will have crisis counseling available to students and staff for as long as it is needed."

Both vehicles stayed on the scene.

"I had to walk away with tears, I was crying also to see the poor little kid there, he had his backpack on him, and they were giving him CPR," witness Keith Williams said.

Police have not released the name of the 22-year-old van driver, and the investigating is ongoing.
