95-Year-Old Woman Killed In Canarsie House Fire

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A fire claimed the life of a 95-year-old woman Saturday in Brooklyn.

The FDNY responded to a house fire around 3 p.m. on East 93rd Street in Canarsie.

Once the flames were out, firefighters discovered the bedridden woman in the basement.

Esther Benoit, homeowner and victim's daughter, identified her as Anna Barthelemy.

"The smoke was so strong and heavy, so I went outside and I said 'fire, fire!' I tried to go and get her, but the smoke was too heavy," Benoit told CBS2's Reena Roy. "Nothing can replace my mother."

Another civilian and one firefighter suffered minor injuries.

The family said they heard some type of explosion, but so far, there's no word on the official cause of the fire.
