NYPD: Suspect Caught On Camera Crawling Through Brooklyn Home

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The search is on for a woman who police say was caught on camera in connection with a burglary in Brooklyn.

It happened last Monday in the area of 48th Street and 15th Avenue in Borough Park.

In surveillance video, the suspect can be seen crawling through the house before standing up and looking around while holding a backpack. Meanwhile, a 90-year-old woman was home alone at the time.

"Horrible. It's horrible that people would really lower themselves to that degree," area resident Nancy Smith told CBS2's Jenna DeAngelis. "Really awful."

Smith, watching the video for the first time, was shocked.

"It's horrible when you have that feeling that somebody else could invade your private property, but a 90-year-old? What a pity," she said.

Police say the woman was not hurt and in fact, she apparently didn't know she was being burglarized at the time so she never had a run in with the suspect, DeAngelis reported.

The homeowner noticed items were missing and contacted police. Police say the victim left her door unlocked and that's how the suspect got in, but people say it's common not to lock up in this community.

"I'm gonna think twice before I leave the house and leave the door open because this prowler is walking the streets," said neighbor Eva Perl.

Police say the suspect stole about $2,000 worth of jewelry and silverware and then ran off. They say it might not be a random case and that the suspect may have known the woman would be home alone.
