13-Year-Old Boy Fatally Struck While Riding Bicycle In Brooklyn

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A 13-year-old boy was hit and killed while riding his bicycle Friday evening in Brooklyn.

Police said the boy, identified as Kevin Flores, was struck by a 2000 Mack oil truck around 5:30 near the intersection of Lewis and Jefferson Avenues in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood.

He was rushed to Interfaith Hospital with severe head trauma and was later pronounced dead.

Neighbors told CBS2's Jessica Latyon they couldn't believe the tragic scene that took place in front of their homes.

"It's crazy. I can't thank about what happened -- speechless," one man said.

"It's horrible. Really have to watch the bikes," a woman added.

"It's just a terrible accident. New York City streets are busy, sometimes people aren't careful crossing the street, sometimes people aren't careful driving, and accidents happen," another man said. "It's just very unfortunate."

Police said the oil truck was traveling north on Lewis Avenue, turning right onto Jefferson Avenue when it hit the boy on his bike.

The driver remained on the scene and was taken into custody with charges pending. Police sources said he was driving illegally with a suspended license.
