The face of philanthropy: Zuckerberg sells another $95M in shares

Bayer, Monsanto to merge, and other MoneyWatch headlines

Facebook Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg sold $95 million in Facebook stock in recent days, bringing to nearly $300 million the value of shares sold during the past month.

Zuckerberg sold about 742,000 shares of stock in the past week, according to a regulatory filing. It’s the third $95 million sale since mid-August by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative Holdings and the Chan Zuckerberg Foundation, established to address problems in education, health and science.

After the birth of their daughter, Maxima, Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, said they would give away 99 percent of their wealth during their lives. That December promise was at the time valued at about $45 billion.

The money is a tiny portion of Zuckerberg’s total wealth, given he still holds more than 400 million in Facebook (FB) stock, currently worth nearly $52 billion.
