Report: Holocaust survivor charged in fatal NJ hit-and-run

HOWELL, N.J. - A Holocaust survivor was charged Monday in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash in Howell, N.J., about 30 miles east of Trenton, reports the Asbury Park Press.

Abraham Chapnick, 83, of Howell, is charged with knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash resulting in death, police told the paper.

The crash on March 12 left Charles McHugh, 58, of Spring Lake, dead. McHugh was riding his bicycle at the time of the collision, reports the paper.

Chapnick, who was born in Poland and has lectured at local schools on his World War II experiences, turned himself in to authorities on Monday. He was released after posting $150,000 bail, according to the paper.

The 83-year-old reportedly faces up to 10 years in prison.
