George Lucas in 2005: "There is no episode seven"

Nine years ago on 60 Minutes, Lesley Stahl asked "Star Wars" creator George Lucas the question everyone has been wondering since the credits rolled on "Return of the Jedi" in 1983:

"What if someone else, besides you, came to you and said, 'I want to make episode seven.' Could you see that happening?"

Lucas replied in no uncertain terms, "No."

"No? Absolutely positively? You're really closing the door without any wiggle room whatsoever?" pressed Stahl.

"Right, there is no episode seven," he said.

Looks like George Lucas's Jedi powers were unable to foresee the future in that 2005 interview.

It's no secret that "Star Wars: Episode VII" has been in the works for a few years, this time directed by J.J. Abrams. This past week, the new cast was officially announced, and here at 60 Minutes, we found it especially interesting, given the Lucas denial in our archives.

The full 60 Minutes interview with George Lucas, produced by Rome Hartman, aired on March 13, 2005.

Editor's Note: Since this interview aired in 2005, George Lucas sold his company, Lucasfilm, to Disney for $4 billion in 2012.
