Bryanna Schug, 12, was sledding while her 8-year-old dog Brody played not far away, but broke through a thin layer of ice, her mom Laura told CBS affiliate WRAL. But Bryanna quickly called 911 and emergency dispatchers were able to get a rescue crew out.

East Wake and Zebulon, N.C., fire department rescuers tied two ladders together with life jackets to try to reach Brody. But the weight of the equipment broke the ice as Brod paddled in the frigid water, waiting for help. On their second try, the rescuers extended a long hook, which Brody swam to, enabling them to pull him to safety.
