Dog attack leaves one teen dead, another injured in N.J.

PATERSON, N.J. -- One 13-year-old boy was killed and another was injured after they were attacked by a bull mastiff dog that had escaped from a property in northern New Jersey Saturday, CBS New York reports.

The Passaic County Prosecutor's Office said the bull mastiff got loose Saturday morning in Paterson, N.J., and encountered the boys a short time later. The teenagers ran in different directions.

One of the boys was later found dead, police said.

A neighbor, Orlando Cepeda, saw the second boy bleeding from his hand as he walked home.

"He said, 'The dog bit me,'" Cepeda said.

He was later treated at a hospital for the bite.

Neighbors said the dog was kept in a fenced-in backyard and it was not clear how the animal had escaped. But they said it had happened before.

A woman across the street said the same dog once bit her son.

Authorities killed the dog and will test it for diseases, prosecutors said.

The exact cause of the boy's death remained under investigation Saturday afternoon, and an autopsy will be conducted.

No criminal complaints have been brought, police said.
