60 Minutes viewers weigh in on Syrian refugee debate
Sunday’s 60 Minutes introduced viewers to a few Syrian refugee families who have resettled in the U.S. It also explored the U.S. government’s vetting process for Syrian refugees.
Some viewers came away from the story agreeing with the decision to welcome refugees:
Outstanding #60Minutes piece on Syrian refugees and the vetting process. If you don't have compassion for these people, you are heartless.

@60Minutes @WorldRelief The story's not new to me, but your report had me flooded with tears. How could we ever close our doors to children?

Loved this coverage and hope all refugees get a second chance at life. Welcome from an American #60Minutes

This viewer isn’t convinced resettlement in the U.S. is the best solution:
@60Minutes Why can't they go to Muslim countries? It would be a better fit. There's going to be no happily ever after bringing them 2 the 🇺🇸

Several viewers were satisfied with the thoroughness of security measures:
Trump is wrong about immigrants not getting vetted, they are extremely vetted before coming to America. You should have watched 60 minutes

Who's watching @60Minutes? Reporting on Syrian refugees. Hurts my heart people are accusing them of being terrorist with no vetting. Not true

Others aren’t convinced the vetting is careful enough:
@60Minutes You try to reassure Americans using extremely attractive woman refugee-NO CONFIDENCE in US govt's "vetting"-.Mexico border porous

For some, the most memorable story was the Southern Baptist pastor and his congregation who are welcoming them:
Pastor Bryant Wright is the sort of Christian that is sorely missing in #GOP rightwing Christian ranks these days. #Syria #60Minutes
— franklin Brown (@franklin19788) October 16, 2016
Not everyone agrees with Pastor Wright’s message about embracing Syrian refugees:
@60Minutes @bryantwright we have millions of previously tax paying Americans in need of financial help & jobs. Do Not guilt me
— GramainTexas (@GramainTexas) October 16, 2016
@60Minutes @BillWhitakerCBS so the government can provide for the refugees, but what about the homeless we currently have?
— Eli Lopez (@EliLopez173) October 17, 2016
We also heard from a viewer who thought the debate over refugees misses the underlying problem:
I am sick of people complaining about refugees, but not about what's causing them to be refugees. Stop bombing their countries. #60Minutes
