White Earth Man Sentenced For Domestic Assault, Possession Of Short-barreled Shotgun

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A White Earth man was sentenced Thursday for assaulting a woman and possessing a short-barreled shotgun at the time of his arrest.

Michael James Deegan, 24, was sentenced to 92 months and 60 months to be served concurrently for one count of possession of an unregistered firearm and one count of assault resulting in substantial bodily injury.

Deegan, who plead guilty on Dec. 16, 2013, admitted earlier that he assaulted a woman on the White Earth Indian Reservation by punching her in the head and body, officials said.

According to officials, Deegan also admitted to having a shotgun on him at the time of his arrest.

Deegan was the first case accepted from White Earth under shared jurisdiction with the Department of Justice.

The case was a result of the investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the White Earth Tribal Police Department and the Mahnomen County Sheriff's Office. It was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Deidre Y. Aanstad.
