5 Kids Help Put Out N.D. Apartment Fire With Water Pistols

WEST FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Five children playing with water pistols are credited with extinguishing a fire on the deck of a neighbor's West Fargo apartment as an adult slept inside.

The elementary school-age children noticed the fire Tuesday afternoon and attacked it with their water pistols before it could get out of hand.

"I smelled fire, then we came over here (and found) black smoke," Katelyn Simon told WDAY-TV.

"I was squirting at it and there was sparks and stuff falling down," said Devon Johnson.

A propane tank was just a few feet away from the flames. Homeowner Terry Myogeto also uses an oxygen tank.

"We were probably minutes away from having a real, real serious fire," Fire Chief Dan Fuller said.

The children banged on the door to wake up Myogeto, who called the fire department. The fire was out by the time firefighters arrived.

"I would say they turned into little heroes," Myogeto said.

The Fire Department has invited the children to the station for a pizza party as a reward.

Investigators believe the fire was caused by discarded smoking materials.
