Twins Sign 2nd-Round Pick, Pitcher Nick Burdi

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Twins have signed right-hander Nick Burdi, the hard-throwing college closer they drafted in the second round.

The Twins announced Tuesday the deal was done.

Burdi will report Friday to Class A Midwest League affiliate Cedar Rapids.

The 6-foot-4, 215-pound Burdi had a 0.49 ERA with 65 strikeouts in 37 innings as a junior for Louisville this season. He recorded 18 saves in 32 games.

The Twins originally drafted Burdi in 2011 in the 24th round out of Downers Grove South High School in Illinois, outside of Chicago, but he went to school instead. Burdi's fastball has been clocked above 100 miles per hour.

The Twins signed their first-round draft pick, shortstop Nick Gordon of Olympia High School in Orlando, Florida, two weeks ago.
