Twins Closer Perkins Nominated For Clemente Award

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Twins have nominated closer Glen Perkins for the 2014 Roberto Clemente Award.

Perkins is one of the 30 club finalists for the annual award, which recognizes the player whose contributions on and off the field best represent the game.

Wednesday marks the 13th annual Roberto Clemente Day, which honors Clemente's legacy and recognizes nominees for the Clemente Award. The award is named for Pirates Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente, who died on Dec. 31, 1972, in a plane crash while on a humanitarian mission to assist earthquake victims in Nicaragua.

The Twins say Perkins is involved in many charitable events in the Twin Cities, including raising money for cystic fibrosis research and donating tickets to underprivileged children through the TwinsCare program.
