Sheriff: Suspicious Activity Prompts School Lockdown In Itasca County

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Authorities say two schools in northern Minnesota were put on lockdown Friday morning after a report of suspicious activity in the area, according to the Itasca County Sheriff's Office.

Officials said the incident started at about 8 a.m. with a report of suspicious activity in the Deer River area. District officials said as a precaution, King Elementary School and Deer River High School were put on lockdown. Deer River is located near Grand Rapids.

Authorities didn't release details on what the activity was. District officials said a suspicious person was seen walking away from the area of the schools. They said there's been no direct threat to either school, and the suspect involved has not made any threats to the schools.

Both schools are in a soft lockdown, which means movement inside the schools and outside the schools is being restricted but classes are continuing as scheduled. Officials reiterated that the lockdown is strictly precautionary and they don't believe either of the schools is under a threat.
