Pool Safety Advocates Say More Should Have Been Done To Prevent Tragedy In St. Paul

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – There are still a lot of questions surrounding the near drowning of two young children in St. Paul.

One of the two boys rescued Monday from an abandoned pool outside an apartment in St Paul is still in critical condition.

Pool safety advocate Scott Taylor said it's hard to understand why the pool in St. Paul was left in such bad condition for so long and why there weren't more safeguards in place.

"So, there should have been a cover on it. If there hadn't been six feet of water we wouldn't be talking right now." Taylor said.

Taylor's daughter Abbey died after an accident at a pool in the Twin Cities in 2007.

He said this is the time of year for people to be mindful of children around pools.

"If you're not there, they should not be anywhere near the water's edge" he said.

He recommends having several barriers in place to keep everyone safe, including fences, covers and even alarms to let parents know if a child is near the water.
