January thaw continues Friday in Twin Cities before dangerous cold returns

NEXT Weather: Noon report for Minnesota from Jan. 17, 2025

MINNEAPOLIS — Temperatures are hanging in the 30s Friday morning in the Twin Cities until the next arctic cold front passes in the afternoon, throwing a few snow showers around northern Minnesota.

Just up to an inch of accumulation is expected, but blowing snow could reduce visibility.

By Friday night, temps will drop into the single digits with wind chills between minus 10 and minus 15.

More arctic air arrives through Saturday into Sunday morning, bringing subzero temps. Sunday and Monday are both expected to be NEXT Weather Alert days to the dangerously cold conditions.

The coldest mornings will likely be Monday and Tuesday, with lows pushing minus 15 and wind chills closer to minus 30. Parts of northern Minnesota could feel closer to minus 45.

This will be the first time the metro has had two consecutive subzero days since December 2022, and it only happens once every three to four years.

The forecast largely stays dry with temps warming back into the 20s by the end of next week
