Kayaker, 15, Drowns In Douglas County

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A 15-year-old kayaker drowned on Sunday in western Minnesota, officials say, when his kayak apparently capsized and he wasn't able to exit the craft.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office says a Montevideo woman called them just before 5 p.m., saying that her son hadn't returned to their campsite at Wildridge Campgrounds on Lobster Lake.

That's when authorities began a search for Brennon David Johnson, and numerous private boaters joined the effort.

Just before 6 p.m., a private boater spotted Johnson and his kayak submerged on the lake's northwest side.

Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene, and the county medical examiner determined that he died of accidental drowning.

The sheriff's office said it appeared Johnson had capsized and was unable to get out of the kayak. He was found with his lifejacket still on.
