Families To Protest MPD Officer Firing At Car During Downtown Melee

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Families will gather at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Minneapolis City Hall in protest after Minneapolis police allegedly fired into a woman's vehicle early Saturday morning during an unrelated large fight.

The female driver also had a group of friends with her. The incident happened at about 2 a.m. Saturday after officers were responding to reports of more than 30 people fighting on the 400 block of Third Avenue North.

The crowd dispersed as officers arrived, and authorities found one man who had been shot in the ankle. A short time later, another victim showed up at the hospital who had been shot in the arm.

The woman was driving in the area where the incident took place. Officers ordered her to back up, and her vehicle collided with a police car. An officer reportedly fired at the vehicle, but there were no injuries.

The woman and her friends were detained by officers. The incident is under investigation.

The families of the woman and her friends involved will demand a meeting with Mayor Betsy Hodges after Monday's rally.
