Autopsy: Girl Found Outside In Bemidji Died Of Hypothermia
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The 6-year-old girl found outside in Bemidji early Thursday morning died of hypothermia, officials say.
An autopsy performed by the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's office concluded that the girl's cause of death was hypothermia, due to being exposed to the frigid elements, the Bemidji Police Department says.
The night before the girl was found, temperatures in the area dipped down to negative 20, with a wind chill of 40 below. How long the girl had been in the cold is not known. She was dressed with a hat, gloves and a coat. It's also unknown why she was outside alone.
The girl, who has not been named, was found near the Washington Ave. Apartments on the 900 block of Carter Circle Northeast at around 6:30 a.m.
When emergency crews got to the town home apartment complex, they found her in the entrance of an apartment building, showing signs of being exposed to the frigid cold. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The girl lived with her mother and a younger sibling. Her mother had initially called police.
The incident remains under investigation, Bemidji police say.
