Zika Cases Reported In Dade, Hillsborough County

MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Florida health officials have confirmed three cases of the mosquito-borne Zika virus in the state.
Officials with Florida's Department of Health said two of the cases were reported in Miami-Dade County. The two had acquired the virus when they went to Colombia in December.
The third case was reported in Hillsborough County from a traveler who had gone to Venezuela - also in December.
None of the cases were locally acquired, according to health officials.
Last week, the Centers For Disease Control (CDC) issued an advisory for pregnant women to steer clear of places where Zika cases have been reported as they investigate its possible link to birth defects.
The virus was discovered in fetal and newborn tissues of babies with microcephaly in Brazil. The CDC is investigating a possible link between the two.
Microcephaly is a neurological disorder that can cause babies to be born with abnormally small heads. This leads to severe developmental issues and sometimes death.
There is no vaccine or medicine to treat the Zika virus.
Outbreaks of Zika have occurred in areas of Africa, Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, and Central and South America, according to CDC.
