Poll: Americans Divided Over Transgender Bathroom Debate

MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Americans are divided when it comes to the transgender bathroom debate, according to a new poll.
The CBS News/New York Times poll says about 46 percent of Americans believe transgender people should use bathrooms based on their gender at birth.
Slightly fewer, 41 percent, think they should be able to use a bathroom based on what gender they identify as.
When they broke it down they found men, Republicans, conservatives, evangelicals, Americans 45 and up, and those who live in the South and Midwest were support bathroom use based on gender.

On the other side of the spectrum, those who supported bathroom use based on gender identity are women, Democrats, liberals, Americans under 45, and those who live in he Northeast and West.
As a whole, most Americans think local and state governments, not the federal government, should set bathroom policies for transgender children in schools.
