MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Miami Beach police are helping raise money for Dwayne Mitchell – a high school senior currently in a coma.

In May, the young man was found unresponsive by his grandmother. His older brother performed CPR on him.  Doctors later determined he went into cardiac arrest after contracting a viral infection.

Tests have revealed a large amount of swelling to Dwayne's brain. In addition to the viral infection, Dwayne also has a heart disease.

He's currently in a coma at Promise Hospital in Miami Lakes.

Dwayne's mother is an officer with Miami Beach police.

"He's in a coma right now and he's been fighting for his life… slowly showing signs of improvement," said Shantell Mitchell.
